The policy will remain in place until the completion of an urgent review by the Scottish Prison Service
The policy was announced in the wake of two controversial cases involving trans prisoners, the second of which prompted an intervention from a UN official.
Over the weekend it then emerged that Tiffany Scott, who was previously known as a man called Andrew Burns, had applied for a prison move. In 2017, she was sentenced over a series of violent incidents at Glenochil Prison in Clackmannanshire, including striking a nurse on her back with chair, punching a prison officer in the face and spitting at another officer and trying to bite him.
Responding to the concerns, Justice Secretary Keith Brown announced a temporary ban on trans prisoners with a history of violence against women serving any time in women’s jails.
