The framework uses latest scientific knowledge to highlight a “safe operating space” for the people of the planet, with limits on the extent of human activities such as land and water usage, disseminating synthetic chemicals through the environment, or emitting greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Going beyond these limits could cause changes that may not be reversible.
As the study shows, humans are using up to about 30% of the energy that was available for biodiversity before the Industrial Revolution. Taking this energy for human use means it is not available for nature, leading to biodiversity loss. For this reason, the scientists suggest the adoption of Human Appropriation of Net Primary Production — a socioecological indicator that serves to quantify the effects of human-caused changes in biomass flows.
As such it would not be prudent for us to knowingly risk changing Earth’s conditions. Our planet is a complex adaptive system and “the internal drivers of its state are interactions between the Geosphere and Biosphere,” she added.
