The discoveryand validated in mice could hold the key to extending the life of the immune system in humans, the researchers said., their work focused on telomeres, the protective 'caps' at the ends of chromosome that act as an 'ageing clock' via control of the number of replications.
The telomere transfer reaction was found to extend certain telomeres about 30 times more than extension exerted by telomerase – the DNA synthesising enzyme responsible for telomere maintenance in stem cells and cells of the immune system, and which is found in foetal tissue, reproductive cells, and sperm.
The purified extracellular vesicle preparations could be administered alone or in combination with a vaccine, the study authors suggested. Alternatively, the 'telomere donor' transfer reaction might be boosted directly in cells.
