Scientists from the International Center of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) have discovered an insect that could help tackle the plastic waste problem. It is the first time an insect species native to Africa is capable of breaking down polluting plastic, writes Fathiya Khamis, lead researcher of the study.

It is the first time an insect species native to Africa is capable of breaking down polluting plastic,The ICIPE researchers studied the lesser mealworm's ability to consume polystyrene, a major microplastic rapidly accumulating in water and soil. The most common form of polystyrene waste is styrofoam.

Scientists say lesser mealworm larvae, a species of darkling beetle called Alphitobius, are capable of eating plastics, which are contributing to global pollution. African countries face a particular environmental challenge due to the high importation of plastic products, low reuse, and lack of recycling of plastic products.
