SAISD Superintendent Jaime Aquino said he needs the school board to vote on a final recommendation on school closures and consolidations in November, so affected families get enough time to make choices for the 2024-2025 school year.San Antonio Independent School District trustees have launched a study of school building capacity designed to shape a proposal for closing and consolidating schools in just over a year.
The outcome of the process is uncertain, Superintendent Jaime Aquino said, but the district owes it to teachers and students to have serious discussions about improving efficiencies and the quality of its educational offerings. All changes likely would take effect in the 2024-2025 school year.RELATED:Trustees Sarah Sorensen and Stephanie Torres voted against the resolution, saying they believed the process it would trigger was too hasty.
In a news conference after the meeting, Aquino and board president Christina Martinez acknowledged the process could be painful for some teachers and families, especially those with cherished traditions in the district and multigenerational loyalty to an alma mater.
