“This year is very vitriolic on both sides,” said Josh Aikens, president of Arise NJ, a conservative-leaning nonprofit. “People are attacking people at a more extreme level.”

Aikens said districts where parents’ rights majorities won last year include Sparta, Wayne, Colts Neck, and Frankford Township, election watchers noted. Control of the board in Roxbury, where there have been heated arguments over school libraries, is contested and will also be interesting to watch, he said.
What’s missing from that messaging, she said, “is the emotional, mental and physical harm these so-called parents’ rights issues” could have on students. Malinowski said he and everyone he knows supports parents’ rights, but most people don’t support a small group dictating what other people’s children are allowed to read.
When the majority shifts on a board of education, the new group in power can make changes quickly. After the new majority of parents-rights board members in Ramapo was sworn in, it canceled new board member training, told their law firm it would not renew their contract, stopped paying for police at board meetings, and overturned two of the superintendent’s recommendations on bullying cases, among other actions.
