At least two local pharmacies are compounding their own remedies for sick children as Children’s Tylenol is hard to find; Health Canada says foreign shipments of medicine on the way
Because of an early rise in viral illnesses over the spring and summer of 2022, many pharmacies and stores across Canada - and their youngest customers - are going through a shortage of over the counter infant and children's liquid acetaminophen and ibuprofen products.
Bare shelves have led some Sault pharmacists - such as The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy - to compound medications to address the current shortage, beginning with base drugs and specially preparing them to fit an individual patient’s needs.“We’re a very specialized pharmacy and we’ve had patients come in here and speak to us and we have compounded it for the people who have had shortage issues,” said Cody MacDonald, a pharmacist with The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy.
“We’ve had lots of calls, lots of anxious parents, especially if the child has a fever. There are a lot of viruses circulating at this moment. There’s RSV, the flu is starting to creep up again so parents are utilizing the compounded versions that we make or we resort to splitting tablets,” said Claudio Cavaliere, Merrett’s Pharmacy pharmacist.
“Our shelves are pretty bare. There’s a lot of empty spots, unfortunately, in Tylenol, ibuprofen, cough syrup and Ensure is on backorder. It’s quite unbelievable. I’ve never experienced this and I’ve been practicing for quite some time.”“We were able to secure some Advil and Ibuprofen and children’s chewable Tylenol but it was a little bit dicey,” said Frank Perna, pharmacist and part owner of Queenstown I.D.A. Drug Mart.
