An event that’s now in its second year, thousands of runners gathered early Friday morning in Memphis to “Finish Liza’s Run.”
, at 4:20am—the time that Fletcher was reportedly abducted—to complete her 8.2-mile route around the University of Memphis, passing the spot where Fletcher was taken. Groups in other parts of the country are doing the same, in her honor.that they wanted to finish the run as a way of “addressing derogatory comments posted on social media about the hour Fletcher was running and the clothes she was wearing.
Heineman said, “We are going to wear shorts and a sports bra and not be completely covered up because we have a right to run comfortably. There shouldn’t be an expectation that you’re gonna be abducted if you run at four in the morning in Memphis.” One of the organizers of this year’s event, Charlie Hayden, told the news station, “I don’t want runners, or women, or Memphians to feel like they lost more than just her. I don’t want us to feel like we’re not safe. I don’t want us to feel like we don’t have a community. I don’t want us to feel like we can’t run.”Abby Carney is a writer and journalist in New York.
