A 54-year-old man from Chatsworth who allegedly robbed a Durban grandmother of her SASSA pension money during a first date will remain in jail. The man made his first appearance in the Verulam Magistrate's Court on Monday morning. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson stated that the case was adjourned to February 17, 2025, for an identification parade and a possible bail application.
According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the man picked up the woman on Wednesday in Isipingo, and they went to Galleria Shopping Mall in Amanzimtoti, where she withdrew her SASSA grant. Prem Balram, the head of RUSA, explained that the couple then left the South Coast and traveled to Hazelmere Dam in Verulam. 'The suspect then sped off with her bag, R2,000 in cash, and her mobile phone. He subsequently deleted his profile on Badoo,' Balram said. The man was apprehended on Thursday in Montford, Chatsworth. Balram revealed that the suspect told officers he decided to flee when the pensioner became insistent about financial assistance after they engaged in sexual intercourse at Hazelmere Dam. The man allegedly confessed to RUSA that he spent R1,600 at Sibaya Casino and the remaining R400 to purchase engine oil for his car. This incident follows a separate case on Wednesday, February 5, 2024, where an undisclosed amount of money was allegedly stolen by the victim's friend. Reports indicate that the victim left her bag inside the suspect's vehicle, and upon her return, she discovered that the suspect had departed with her belongings.
