Many school divisions say the COVID-19 pandemic had affected reading development in schools as some children couldn't access the same supports.

Provincially, 69 per cent of children in Grade 3 were reading at that level or higher in 2021-22. That’s higher than the 67 per cent rate reported in 2020-21, but still well below the 73-75 per cent rate reported from 2014 to 2019., around the 52-55 per cent range during that same timeframe. A provincial rate for 2021-22 was not provided.
However, when most returned, teachers noticed children had greater needs but their classrooms weren’t as equipped to help deal with the higher demand, according to Samantha Becotte, the president of the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation. Engler-Stringer said her one child is in a Grade 7-8 split classroom with more than 30 kids in Saskatoon, adding that the teacher simply doesn’t have enough time to help everyone one-on-one.Article content
