Training offered by the International Association of Fire Fighters simulates the worst situations firefighters could find themselves in.

The course is deeply personal for master instructor Lionel Crowther, who serves with the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service.

“They’re going to make a difference for when that member is in that mayday situation; they’re going to be the reason why they’re successful.” Trevor Warren, an instructor for officer development and technical rescue, and vice-president of IAAF Local 80 representing Saskatoon firefighters, said the training is based on research into line-of-duty deaths among North American firefighters.

While having the physical strength to do things like hang from a window frame while waiting for a ladder to arrive remains important, Warren said the mental tools the training imparts are vital to ensuring crews have the resilience to stay calm in the worst possible situations.Article content
