Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service , Edward Kieswetter, has been appointed chair of the World Customs Organisation . Kieswetter was elected during the WCO’s council session at its Brussels headquarters last Friday, marking the second time a South Africa chair heads the 185-member organisation. He succeeds Ahmed Al-Khalifa, director general of Bahrain’s Customs Clearance and Services.
Listen: Why Sars had to apologise to former employees and compensate them “Leadership is an inordinate responsibility and a rare privilege to assist international efforts to bring matters of customs to the centre of international trade facilitation,” he added. Under his chairmanship, Kieswetter hopes to achieve the intents of the WCO through a practical, well-managed Secretariat, a transformational modernisation plan, and an appropriate set of priorities, among others.
