Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy is set to stand trial in October over charges of corruption

Sarkozy is accused of having tried to obtain classified information about an investigation from a former judge in early 2014 through his lawyer, Le MondeSarkozy has been hit with a slew of corruption and illegal campaign financing allegations — all of which he rejects — since losing to François Hollande in the 2012 presidential election.that he spent nearly €43 million on his failed reelection campaign — almost twice the spending limit.

Sarkozy's party, then known as the UMP and now called Les Républicains, is accused of working with a public relations firm called Bygmalion to hide the true cost of his bid, using fake invoices. Sarkozy has said he was unaware of the fraud by executives at Bygmalion, who are also implicated in the case, according to
