A derelict 18th century prison that some claim is the ‘cradle of European culture’ is undergoing a major renovation
, but it has not taken the right wing firebrand long to make headlines. Her Brothers of Italy party, which is descended from neofascists, brandished its forceful approach to law and order by bringing in heavy fines and prison sentences for organisers of illegal raves. It has clashed with NGOs by refusing to let a ship carrying migrants dock in Italian ports, drawing indignation from Italy’s EU partners, especially France, for what many have described as a breach of international law.
Organisers are now racing against the clock to “lock in funding”, Ms Costa explained, in efforts to prevent a potentially antagonistic right-wing government removing finances. Ring-fenced unspent funds are being hastily assigned to renovation projects, building tenders and research partnerships.
