As the summer and festive season approaches, more people take to the mountains and the national parks in and around Cape Town. Alongside the fun and games, security risks also ramp up, which means the Mother City authorities should have their hands full. The South African National Parks has unveiled a range of measures set to ensure smooth visitor experiences across its 21 national parks, all in anticipation of the 2024 festive season.
Parks’ safety and security measures draw on advanced technology, K9 units, aerial support, and strong partnerships with provincial and local authorities, community groups, and civil society organisations. This collaborative approach, proven effective through joint planning, intelligence sharing, and capacity-building, has led to impactful successes—from awareness campaigns and community mobilisation to arrests and firm convictions.
Parks set up and manage ongoing collaborations with civil society, focusing on keeping both visitors and park users safe in Table Mountain National Park . “This effort is intended to streamline innovation and organise the mobilisation of resources and expertise in support of crime prevention. Victim support and organising trauma counselling will also be central to VSS.”
