SANParks Honorary Rangers celebrate 60 years

This year, the SANParks Honorary Rangers, the official volunteer organisation of South African National Parks is celebrating its 60For six decades, honorary rangers have used their time, experience, skills, and expertise to lend a helping hand in protecting South Africa’s rich natural heritage in the country’s 23 national parks.
“The honorary rangers’ dedication is born out of a deep love for nature. They work with a commitment that is inspiring and a privilege to experience,” says Paul Colditz, National Chairperson of the SANParks Honorary Rangers. Colditz says over the years the organisation’s scope has broadened to include fundraising, education, and support for rangers and K9 units.
“Currently, there are over 2 200 honorary rangers - all volunteers - based in 31 regions around the country and participating in more than 180 active conservation projects.” The lion’s share of funds raised has been allocated to conservation, ranger support and anti-poaching initiatives, as identified by SANParks. Colditz says the relationship with SANParks is excellent and the two organisations collaborate on all levels.Honorary rangers’ involvement encompasses much more than field work.
Colditz says prospective honorary rangers must attend an orientation course and contribute 50 hours of work before full membership is awarded. “To be actively involved in the conservation of the natural heritage for which South Africa is known around the world, is not only enriching on a personal level but is also an investment in the future of our country.”Who we choose to trust can have a profound impact on our lives.
