A 'Masterpiece' adaptation of an uncompleted Austen novel brings many of the writer’s subtexts front and center
Even a Jane Austen completist might be wary of “Sanditon,” which Austen never completed: Only 11 chapters of the novel were finished when the writer died in 1817, leaving among her literary effects six timeless novels and this fragment of a story, which
seemed to be about ambition, entrepreneurship, race, money and no small amount of hypochondria. Since then, more than half-a-dozen other authors have tried to flesh it out—though none with quite as much flesh, or allusions to it at least, as Andrew Davies.
