The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has released a statement addressing a viral video showing soldiers raising a white flag during combat in eastern DRC. The SANDF clarifies that the white flag was a result of discussions with opposing forces for a temporary truce and not a sign of surrender.

The South African National Defence Force ( SANDF ) has issued a statement clarifying a viral video depicting soldiers raising a white flag during combat in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo ( DRC ). The SANDF emphasized that the white flag was not a sign of surrender but rather the result of discussions between opposing forces to agree on a temporary truce.

This truce would allow the M23 rebels to recover their dead and injured near the SANDF base and would also provide access to medical facilities for SANDF troops. The SANDF stressed that this practice of temporary truces is common during wartime. Department of Defense head of communication Siphiwe Dlamini assured the public that the SANDF remains dedicated to its peacekeeping responsibilities under the United Nations Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO). He also confirmed that four SANDF members tragically lost their lives during the combat. The confrontation took place near Goma airport, close to the border with Rwanda, where the SANDF base is situated. Mortar fire from the exchange unfortunately resulted in the loss of three soldiers on the base, with a fourth succumbing to injuries later in a hospital.
