Sanco demands R150 flat electricity rate for poor households

Thomas Thaga, chairperson of the Johannesburg branch of the SA National Civic Organisation , has proposed a significant change, which he says will help alleviate the financial burden on poor households. In a memorandum submitted to City Power , Thaga advocated for a flat electricity rate of R150 per month for underprivileged families.

Sanco is also asking the power utility for the installation of meter boxes for illegal structures, hostels, and rental rooms, provided that an agreed-upon flat rate monthly payment is made. In a statement released on Thursday, City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena accused Sanco of intimidating its employees and instigating violence. These threats are concerning, especially given the history of violence in the area. The intimidation cannot be taken lightly because it comes at a time when our teams have been repeatedly subjected to attacks and insults, which affects service delivery in the city.
