The pandemic nixed the swim in 2021 while a New Year’s Eve sewage spill canceled the 2022 iteration.

One of San Pedro’s oldest and most popular — not to mention coldest — traditions is set to return next week, with swimmers braving the chilly waters of Cabrillo Beach on New Year’s Day.

The annual Polar Bear swim, which dates back seven decades, will take place on Sunday, Jan. 1, after being canceled the previous two years, first because of the coronavirus pandemic and then because of a sewage spill.
