The man was ejected from his motorcycle after hitting a guardrail, police said.
SAN JOSE — Authorities have identified the motorcyclist killed in a traffic collision Sunday afternoon after hitting a truck and a guardrail on Interstate 880, according to California Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported at about 11:57 a.m. in the area of southbound I-880, just north of the East Brokaw Road on-ramp, said CHP Officer Ross Lee. Officers arrived on scene at about 12:03 p.m. A 33-year-old San Jose man, identified as Eric Lee Nelson, was operating a 2005 Suzuki GSX-R 600 motorcycle and for an “undetermined reason,” crashed into the back of a Ford F150, police said. Nelson continued into the right shoulder after colliding into the truck, hit a metal guardrail and was ejected from the motorcycle, sustaining fatal injuries.
Nelson died at the scene and was believed to have been driving “at a high rate of speed” and “erratically” in between lanes of traffic, Lee said. The driver of the truck wasn’t injured in the accident. Authorities don’t know if the motorcyclist was impaired during the collision. All southbound lanes of I-880 were closed for about an hour during the investigation and southbound traffic was redirected to the center median, according to police.
