Twelve white male San Francisco police officers who claimed they were passed over for promotions are suing the city for race and sex discrimination. A 13th plaintiff says she was also denied promotion because she is a white lesbian. The plaintiffs claim that although they received higher grades on the civil service promotional exam, minority and female candidates were promoted ahead of them.
When considering promotions, the San Francisco Police Department then examines all those who scored within a particular band and evaluates them based on four other criteria: good conduct; job performance; education, training and experience; and the department's affirmative-action goals. Although they do consider affirmative action goals, these goals are just one of the criteria examined.
Much like the university, it seems police department which serves communities with racial minorities and women, would also benefit from having women in minorities in its top ranks. I certainly wouldn't want my local police force to be run by all people of the same race and gender. There's no way that could lead to the best interactions within a diverse community.
