In the incoming Congress, the San Diego congressperson will represent members who have served for five or fewer terms.
As House Democrats reorganized their leadership team for the incoming Congress this week, Rep. Sara Jacobs, D-San Diego, was elected Caucus leadership representative, a position reserved for members who have served five terms or fewer.
Earlier this week, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., 52, made history as the first Black lawmaker elected to lead a party caucus in either chamber. He’s joined by Rep. Katherine Clark, D-Mass., 59, who will serve as minority whip, responsible for tracking and counting Democratic votes. The third ranking official will be Rep. Pete Aguilar, D-San Bernardino, 43, a Congressional Hispanic Caucus member and former mayor of Redlands who was elected Democratic Caucus chair, filling Jeffries’ previous role.
“As we usher in a new generation of leaders, I’m incredibly grateful that House Democrats have prioritized and uplifted young voices, and I’m looking forward to cementing that priority in the 118th Congress,” Jacobs said in a statement. “With our democracy and our bodily autonomy on the line, women, young people, and people of color turned out to vote for Democrats in record numbers — and it’s our responsibility to keep them engaged and invested in our work.
Her new role positions her to advance San Diego’s interests within the Democratic Caucus, and as leadership representative, she will represent newer members of Congress and highlight younger voices, her spokesperson Lauren McIlvaine said.
