The Santa Fe Christian High grad wins the first set in convincing fashion but loses in three sets, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2, at the Barnes Center on Sunday

As San Diego’s Katherine Hui took the first set, the hometown favorite had to figure that her opponent had much more to offer in the final of USTA Billie Jean King Girls’ 18s National Championships.

“Honestly, it was just trusting in myself and trying to play every point the best I could,” said Ngounoue, who turned 17 on July 19. “I was just trying to expect the best outcome out of everything.” Even amid her early struggles, Ngounoue showed signs of a strong serve. She would finish with 24 service winners, compared with nine for Hui, and have the only ace of the match.

Hui competed in the final in her tourney farewell after reaching the semifinals for the second straight year. In all, she appeared in the event five times, starting at age 13.
