San Antonio police were ordered to seize nude and indecent material in 1945.
Anderson ordered city police to seize the material after a protest from Rev. John F. Daly, the head of the Legion in San Antonio, a local chapter of the national organization that for years waged war on Hollywood and films in an effort to clean up the movies.Daly told city leaders his organization would then set its sights on Spanish-language movies shown at theaters on the West Side.
On Jan. 4, Daly, the pastor of St. Gerard’s Parish, told city leaders that San Antonio had been “flooded” with pictures of naked women on calendars and other materials. He referred in particular to one large local title and abstract company, which was sending calendars displaying nude women to its customers. Daly said the president of the company refused to quit distributing the calendar and reportedly told the priest: “You are nothing but a darned old prude, and I wish you would keep your nose out of our business. We will distribute what we please.”
Anderson indicated he might lobby for charges against distributors of indecent material, pointing to a recently enacted state law that made the display of indecent pictures a misdemeanor instead of a felony. “I’m no prude myself, as everybody knows, but I don’t think all nude calendars are good advertising,” Anderson said.
