She’d dreamed of being a nurse, but her family couldn’t afford college. After high school, a priest in Falls City offered to pay her tuition to Incarnate Word.
She drove a first-aid truck in the hot California heat, several blocks ahead of marchers on the Delano Grape Strike march. After parking, she ran back to the group and marched with them to the truck. Then, she’d do it again.
Townspeople welcomed them with food when they stopped in their town for the night. The marchers sang “De Colores,” an uplifting song that became an anthem of the United Farm Workers of America movement.A 22-year veteran of the Air Force, Vincent T. “Thank you for helping our national hero César Chávez to complete his march for farm workers’ justice and successfully organize the United Farm Workers Union,” Garcia said. “San Antonio is proud of your service.” In 1955, she fulfilled her promise. The priest wrote her a congratulatory letter with an unspoken tab — how much she owed him for her education. She sent him $30 of her $125 monthly check for several years.
After a year at Santa Rosa Hospital, she moved to California, working as a public health nurse in the Mission District of San Francisco.
