A 28-year-old man is facing a felony charge of animal cruelty after police say he stabbed his dog in the throat with a box cutter.
Police were called to the 200 block of Coopwood, on the city's West Side, where officers said John C. Schafer threatened to kill his family dog and then attempted to do so in April.The dog, a young male American Staffordshire terrier named Zander, was taken to the Animal Care Services veterinary clinic with a deep puncture on the left side of his neck.
Zander has undergone extensive care and treatment and was fostered by a pair of animal care officers.Schafer was taken into custody Wednesday. He faces up to 10 years in jail and a $10,000 fine if convicted.
