Nirenberg, a District 8 councilman at the time, was forced into a runoff in his initial 2017 bid against incumbent Mayor Ivy Taylor. He also faced a runoff in 2019 but avoided that outcome in 2021. Nirenberg earned 62 percent of the vote in a rematch against 2019 challenger Greg Brockhouse. He has focused largely on workforce development, affordable housing and climate change mitigation, but has faced pushback for the limited results of those initiatives.
