San Antonio hotels’ 2Q revenue surpassed 2019 figure, even as occupancy lags pre-pandemic level

The Hyatt Regency San Antonio Riverwalk hotel recently recently completed a $38 million makeover. Revenue at area hotels for the second quarter was up year over year and compared to the second quarter 2019 — before the COVID-19 pandemic.Recent quarterly revenue at hotels in San Antonio and statewide has surpassed pre-pandemic levels, as higher room rates and increased inventory appear to more than compensate for occupancy rates that are still slightly lagging.

Revenue per available room per day, or RevPAR — a key measure of hotels’ performance — was also up at $84.10. That was the second-highest among Texas’ major cities during the three months ended June 30, with Austin clocking in at $125.11. Local RevPAR was $69.25 in second quarter 2021 and $78.87 in second quarter 2019.

Group and corporate travel, along with conventions, are rebounding at a slower pace, and business at downtown hotels is lagging behind some suburban properties, he said. Hoteliers in Dallas collected $746.2 million in the second quarter, up 17.9 percent from the same period in 2019. In the Fort Worth-Arlington area, they took in $341 million, up 24.4 percent.
