Both find comfort carrying around the stones.“It’s kind of like still having him there, not just in ash form, because what can you really do with ashes,” said Mitchell, a pre-school educator.

Parting Stone's solution is to converts the ashes into small stones. The process starts with refining, in which inorganic materials such as screws or plates are removed. Then the ash is turned into a clay-like material with the addition of a binder and shaped into stones, which are heated in a kiln. The stones are polished, packaged and mailed to the loved ones.

Alexandra Jo, Parting Stone’s director of outreach and education, said the company had seen an uptick in interest since the episode aired in April. Each order includes a blank note card, and customers are invited to use it to share their experiences with the company.
