FILE PHOTO -- Mayor Ron Nirenberg praised the City Council's approval to accept funds to reconstruct Ackerman Road near the Texas Army National Guard’s Martindale Army Heliport in the East Side.The San Antonio City Council this week voted to accept a defense grant of up to $643,000 to reconstruct Ackerman Road between the I-10 frontage road and the entrance gate of the Texas Army National Guard’s Martindale Army Heliport in the East Side.

The DCIP grant will save the city 70 percent of the total project cost of $919,000, according to a city news release. DCIP is a Department of Defense program that is administered by the Local Defense Community Cooperation office. San Antonio was one of 17 applicants approved for the funding that was made available in 2023 to the entire DoD.“This is another tangible example of how Military City USA responds to military commander needs,” Nirenberg said.
