Early voting results — the first box to be counted in each of six school districts in Bexar County with board seats or bond proposals on the ballot — showed incumbents ahead of challengers in San Antonio ISD and Northside ISD.
Two incumbents, Gerald Lopez in District 2 and Bobby Blount in District 4, were ahead of multiple challengers in early vote totals. Lopez had 44 percent of the vote against two other candidates, and Blount had almost 27 percent against six opponents. Both had equated “parents rights” rhetoric with harassment of teachers and librarians, but their positions on issues and policy became secondary to questions about the politics of Hoffmann, who was in the crowd of Donald Trump supporters outside the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 — but not among the rioters who stormed the building, she said. Hoffmann refused to concede that the 2020 election of President Joe Biden was conducted fairly.
Chumbley and Duran took similar stances on the need to support teachers and students dealing with a deepening mental health crisis. Chumbley downplayed his Bexar County Republican Party endorsement in interviews but in a mailer to voters in the campaign’s final days, he offered language from the “parents' rights” playbook and a full-throated rejection of what he called “woke” teaching in the classroom.
