With Samsung set to launch the Galaxy S22 family next month, is there a place for the new Galaxy S21 FE?
, the South Korean company has delivered a keenly awaited handset that some may think is five months to late. Maybe it is, but it’s still found a wonderful home in the portfolio thanks to its timely launch ahead of the Galaxy S22 family.Let’s put that ’21’ slightly to the side. It’s useful as a moniker and the S is useful to have as a brand name, but to my mind the Galaxy S21 FE is part of the Galaxy S22 family not the S21 family. The handset is going to be measured against its contemporaries.
A glance at the specs sheet confirms this, especially looking at the increased performance of the camera. Yes it’s a step up from the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition, but it’s also a step up from the regular Galaxy S21, which if you go purely by the numbering feels like the next rung up the ladder. For those of us who have an encyclopaedic knowledge of phones, we can happily go in to a phone store and pick up “the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G Fan Edition with 128 GB of storage”. There’s a much larger group that will go into the store and ask for “a new Samsung phone”. Some might even go with “Samsung Galaxy” but the point is that the numbering system that is prized by many is not the only way to buy a phone.
There’s going to be a lot of coverage of the upcoming Galaxy S22, S22 Plus, and S22 Ultra, so the customers could arrive with “a new Samsung” or “new Galaxy”. At which point they have four of the new Galaxy S handsets to consider. We’ll know for sure when the S22 family arrives, but I personal suspect that the S21 FE is going to sit nicely below the vanilla S21.
