Sam’s Super Samwiches, iconic hot dog joint in Alabama, opens in a new location.
Sam’s Super Samwiches had been closed for several months, much to the dismay of its faithful customers. The restaurant’s owners, the Graphos family, announced in November 2021 that Sam’s had lost its lease at its previous location, 2812 18th St. South, after more than 50 years in business.
“As many of you know, Sammy Graphos, who was the heart and soul of Sam’s Super Samwiches, passed away on October 5, 2021,” the Graphos family said Nov. 3. via the restaurant’s. “While Sammy can never be replaced, we hope to continue serving the people of Birmingham for many years to come. However, unfortunately, after 51 years, our landlord decided not to renew our lease. So with heavy hearts, we have vacated the premises while we seek a new location in our beloved Homewood.
The Shaia family, owners of the building at 2812 18th St. South, released a statement the next day that said the lease wasn’t renewed because of unresolved electrical problems and other safety issues at Sam’s. The Graphos family chose to surrender the lease, Ken Shaia said, and did not make necessary repairs that were pending for years.
“We all loved Sammy, he had an incredible personality, made the best chili cheese dog and was a fixture of the Homewood community,” Shaia said in the statement. “Notwithstanding rampant speculation about the lease, my family, as the landlord, has remained silent out of respect for Sammy’s family. However, everyone should know that closing of the store really had nothing to do with Sammy’s passing. There had been safety issues at the shop for years.
