Reacquired by the Edmonton Oilers in a trade with the Vancouver Canucks and brought up from the American Hockey League, Gagner went into the game against his former club Thursday a rejuvenated player. He had three goals and four points in nine games with the Oilers heading into the contest.
Gagner was playing with the Toronto Marlies prior to the trade, loaned to the AHL team by the Canucks at the start of the season. In 43 games with the Marlies, Gagner had 12 goals and 37 points. “Both of them have that in their game and I felt like last game when I was playing with Leon, there is a lot of give-and-goes and kind of reading off each other. He’s a guy who is a big body and he creates a lot of space down low and allows time for me to get open.”
Originally selected sixth overall by the Oilers in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Gagner jumped to the NHL straight out of junior. He was part of the Oilers original rebuild shorty after the club went to Game 7 of the 2006 Stanley Cup Final. Gagner played seven seasons in Edmonton before being dealt to the Tampa Bay Lightning and then, consequently, flipped to the Arizona Coyotes following the 2013-14 season.
