Designed in 1978 by Fiamma Ferragamo, daughter of the house founder, Salvatore Ferragamo’s ladylike Vara shoe has recently inspired a new, more streamlined shoe, the Viva ballerina.

Designed in 1978 by Fiamma Ferragamo, daughter of the house founder, it has recently inspired a new, more streamlined shoe : the Viva ballerina. “I’ve modernized the design elements while celebrating the Vara’s signature femininity,” says creative director Paul Andrew. “The Vara bow shape is magnified three times the original size, and constructed in the same material as the rest of the shoe.
“Why did I notice them? Well, I was closer to the floor than everyone else, so they were in my eye line; but more than that, they were emblematic of the tasteful woman of means who’s always on the go.” It wasn’t the remembered past that Andrew had in mind when designing the Viva, a consciously millennial shoe that speaks to the needs of women today.
