The historic Jordan Ferry Union Church in Shelburne County will be demolished this spring. Built in 1874, and owned by the community, the building has fallen into such a state of disrepair, the decision was made by the community at a public meeting last year to tear it down. KATHY JOHNSON - Kathy JohnsonJORDAN FERRY, N.S. — Not since the 1990s has there been a service of any kind held at the historic Jordan Ferry Union Church in Shelburne County.
Before this could happen, however, the heritage property had to be deregistered by the Municipality of Shelburne. As part of the process, a public hearing was held at the Jan. 11 council meeting. “The floor is now completely gone. The plaster is all falling. The roof is leaking… the money it would cost” to fix the building up is a lot, says Mike Peterson, chair of the Jordan Ferry Union Church Trustees.
Four of the centre pews and the church bell are going to be preserved and reused on the property. The plan, says Peterson – if there’s any money left – is to erect four posts and a roof with the bell in the middle of it on the property and the four pews around the bell, giving people a place to sit when they visit the cemetery.Due to the condition of the building, only a few people are permitted in the building at one time.
