In her acceptance speech, Mercer said she is proud of the province she calls home. But to truly love something is to acknowledge both the beauty and faults, she said. “Unfortunately, our province has a track record of being behind the times on women’s issues,” Mercer said. “We were among the last to get the vote back in 1925, almost a decade after the Prairies, and last year we were among the last to get pay equity legislation, thanks to the power of journalism.”
