Ever since the Mexican actress first became a Hollywood darling in the late ’90s, she’s managed to dazzle and transfix the paparazzi’s cameras, both on the red carpet and off. But the Oscar nominee is far from a cookie-cutter film star—she’s also an unsung fashion trailblazer. Her history of breaking all the style rules goes way back to 1997, when she presented at the Oscars in a tiny, shimmering white Armani dress.
Another daring red carpet move was at the MTV Music Video Awards in 1998, when Hayek settled upon a simple black dress, but couldn’t decide what jewelry to wear. Instead, the actress took the unorthodox route and applied temporary tattoos of purple butterflies to her neck, chest, and arms. “I thought butterflies would be nice. It was my design to make the dress more interesting,” she says. “They were really hard to come across.
After several other experimental sartorial moments—including her “sexy angora cardigan with diamonds” look at the Cannes Film Festival in 1999—she eventually landed an Annie Leibovitz–shot. She reveals that the monkey she shot with, Tyson, injured her during the movie; ever the professional, she still did a shoot with him afterward.
