The energy efficiency standards of lightbulbs sold in South Africa are going to be raised to a level that effectively prohibits the sale of incandescent and fluorescent lightbulbs.

, when it was made available for public comment, and the final notices were released on 24 May 2023.The first phase, which comes into effect in 12 months and will last for a period of two years, will increase the efficiency standard of General Service lamps to 90 lumens per watt.

In the second phase, which comes into effect in three years' time, the efficiency standard will be raised to 105 lumens per watt.When the policy comes into effect, it will effectively ban the sale of incandescent and fluorescent lightbulbs as it does not meet the efficiency standards that will come into effect.The study found that fluorescent and incandescent lights do not meet the minimum efficiency standards that will be coming into effect.

He added that electricity bills can be reduced by as much as 40% just by changing the lights to more efficient alternatives."You should be using LEDs because those produce more light, using less power."Khambule said significant energy reductions could be achieved from relatively small changes, such as lights.
