San Antonio FC notches third consecutive clean sheet, winning at New Mexico United

Austin FC plays San Antonio FC during a U.S. Open Cup soccer match on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, at Toyota Field in San Antonio. San Antonio won 2-1 in overtime.San Antonio FC remained unbeaten on the road and moved into a first-place tie atop the Western Conference with a 1-0 win against New Mexico United on Saturday at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque, N.M.

After a draining 2-1 win in extra time against MLS club Austin FC on Wednesday in the U.S. Open Cup, SAFC survived the quick turnaround, winning in front of 11,420 after losing all three previous trips to Isotopes Park. San Antonio notched a third consecutive clean sheet, highlighted by goalkeeper Jordan Farr’s diving save during second-half stoppage time — one of just two shots New Mexico put on net.

SAFC’s Justin Dhillon scored the lone goal of the match in the 67th minute, sending a penalty kick down the middle as New Mexico keeper Cody Mizell lunged to his right. Dhillon drew the penalty as he dribbled through a group of defenders across the top of the 18-yard box. Matched by only Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC atop the Western Conference standings after a 4-0 start in road matches, San Antonio FC returns home to face Monterey Bay FC at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
