The South African Football Association (Safa) may be headed for a showdown with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) as it wants to have discussions over the format and age limit of the DStv Diski Challenge (DDC).

“I am not sure where they [the PSL] get the approach to say it is a development league and serving a purpose. Let’s look at what Zambia is doing — they have national U-17 and U-19 leagues.“If you check now, Zambia is a main force in Cosafa and, yes, we need to have that kind of discussion because their [reserve] league remains commercial.“Players who are playing there [in their top-flight] come from U-17 interprovincial tournament.

“There could be a discussion there, because from where I am standing I don’t think it [the DDC as it is] really serves the purpose. Even if Percy Tau has played in that league, but he was [also] in the Motsepe League [third tier] already.” Steenbok said he wants Safa to implement Caf-standard club licensing regulations on PSL clubs regarding coaches of Premiership teams needing a minimum A-licence requirement.

Historically the league has had a poor relationship with Safa and been reluctant to bend to the rulings of the mother body. READ MORE
