On Wednesday, August 23, Wilko administrators Price Waterhouse Cooper (PwC) said there was no potential buyer interested in the entirety of the Worksop-based retail business
Readers have been saddened by a bleak update from Wilko's administrator on the future of its employees and stores. On the evening of Wednesday, August 23, Wilko administrators Price Waterhouse Cooper said there was no potential buyer interested in the entirety of the Worksop-based retail business.
The administrator said as a result it was "likely" there will be redundancies and store closures in the future, but that it was working closely with the government, JobCentre plus, unions and large employers to try quickly return staff to employment. PwC also refuted claims from union GMB that the majority of stores will close next week, saying there are currently no plans to do so.
Nottinghamshire Live readers expressed their sympathy for staff working currently working through the uncertainty after the most recent update. One commenter said:" [I've been in one of the stores today and the staff still do not know what is happening and if they are being made redundant. Absolutely disgraceful."In a reply, another reader said: "The uncertainty is clearly horrible for the staff but it was right that an attempt was made to try save jobs.
The administrator's statement came after Sky reported Poundland-owner Pepco Group and B&M European Value Retail were in talks to acquire about 150 of Wilko's 400-strong store estate. Wilko employs 12,000 people, with around 2,000 based at its head office in Worksop, Bassetlaw.
