The party insisted on nominating Clinton despite her deep unpopularity, even among women, simply because it was her time. The same notion of rewarding a lifetime of service with a shot at the presidency played a role in Biden’s nomination.
Both leadership races functioned more as coronations than democratic contests, so it’s no wonder Democrat challengers stepping up to primary Biden. There’s a sense the game is rigged, and unless the gerontocratic establishment wants you to win, there’s little use wasting time, money, sweat and tears on a futile mission.Article content
Canada’s Liberals face a similar dilemma. As Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s personal popularity plummets, especially among, there appears to be no viable backup plan. Similar to Harris, Chrystia Freeland was the presumptive successor, but her recent ill-advised remarks on inflation and high gas prices, combined with a lack of public speaking skill, make her a big risk.
Mark Carney’s name has also been floated, but it’d be lunacy to run a former central banker in this environment — and even more so against likely Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre. No other cabinet minister, including Mélanie Joly and Anita Anand, has managed to connect meaningfully with the public or establish broad credibility.Article contentOutside Trudeau’s direct inner circle?
