This disturbing trend can be traced to the country’s move away from mandatory minimum sentencing, as a result of a series of court decisions and legislative changes brought in by the governing Liberals. In particular, it was encouraged by Bill C-5, which received royal assent in November. That’s surely little consolation to the Quebec woman whose rapist will now return home. This was a violent attack, both physically and psychologically. The next day, the woman sought treatment at Montreal General Hospital for injuries sustained during the assault. Three months later, she returned to the hospital to seek treatment for depression.

Rather, according to the Montreal Gazette, the man told the court that “sex is sex” and “the word sex includes hand job, blow job, anal sex, oral sex.” Forgive me if this doesn’t sound like the mindset of a man who’s committed to respecting others’ physical boundaries.
