International Relations Minister, Ronald Lamola welcomes Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement.
Supporters of Israeli hostages, who were kidnapped during the deadly October 7 2023 attack by Hamas, attend a protest to demand a deal to bring every hostage home at once, amid Gaza ceasefire negotiations, in Tel Aviv, Israel, January 15, 2025.The 42-day first phase of the ceasefire should see a total of 33 captives returned from Gaza, with the release of three female hostages on the first day of the ceasefire and the remaining 30 in batches every week.
Speaking from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Lamola says the challenge is whether this agreement will hold. He says, “This has been the call of South Africa from the beginning of a ceasefire, of a discalation, to a two state solution for both countries and we see it as step towards that direction. It is rather 15 months later where we could have not seen such huge amount of people that have been killed by the Israeli forces if the call had been heeded earlier.
He says that the case before the ICJ was a call for a ceasefire but also for an investigation into the plausibility of genocide that occurred during the 15 month war. Lamola says, “The reason we went to court was to request for a ceasefire, also some of the provisional measures related to an investigation on the plausibility of genocide and the court found that indeed that there is plausible genocide which remains on the table as you are aware. We have not yet reached a stage where we can conclude that the case on merits must be withdrawn – as you are aware on the merits of the case the plausible genocide has already been committed in the last 15 months.
