Full operations have resumed at the Lebombo port of entry at the border between SA and Mozambique.
Mozambique authorities at the border have advised the South African Border Management Authority that cargo that trucks are carrying will be processed manually.
Earlier this week, protesters stormed the offices of the Ressano Garcia border on the Mozambican side. This led to some Mozambique border officials fleeing their station and seeking refuge with their South African counterpart. Truck drivers who were stuck on the South African side of the border for days are relieved that they are allowed to cross into Mozambique.
“I’m going back to Maputo. I don’t know what is going on, but we saw what is going on; they told us that the border is opened, but we are still traumatized. I would try my best to be strong until I delivered my products. We are happy because we have been standing for four days waiting to cross with cargo, and now that we are crossing, we are happy. We are spending a lot of money, but at the same time, no money was coming because our work is performance-based,” says one truck driver.
