The Northern Cape Education Department says it will not lay off more than 600 teachers.
Education MEC Abraham Vosloo appeared before Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Basic Education yesterday.
Vosloo says, “Chair, I think we have painted the picture to say if we had to retrench teachers the number should have been 663 teachers, but in the context of the Northern Cape where we have 554 schools and where we are having 9700 teachers , and we are having 330 000 learners and the vastness within the province for us to retrench 666 teachers will be a devastating blow in the education system in the Northern Cape. Given the challenges that we are sitting in just in the delivery of services.
