SA's carbon-intensive economy not sustainable in the face of climate crisis - Ramaphosa
President Cyril Ramaphosa urged other developing nations to act swiftly to ditch fossil fuels in favour of green energy.
President Cyril Ramaphosa warned other developing nations on Monday that future carbon taxes proposed by rich countries would damage their economies unless they act swiftly to ditch fossil fuels in favour of green energy. "Instruments like the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism ... the potential to cause great damage to developing economies," he said.
"This is just one illustration of the fact that climate changes is as much an economic issue as it is a scientific, social justice, human rights and a developmental issue. It has a direct and material impact on activity across our economy," he added. Ramaphosa reiterated calls for international partners to fulfil their commitments of financing both climate mitigation and adaptation.
