Are we one step closer to getting Starlink? Minister Malatsi is willing to bypass BEE rules to let in the technology, describing it as the government’s biggest empowerment programs.

Communications and Digital Tech nology Minister Solly Malatsi said that he will issue a policy direction to the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa so Starlink can bypass the Broad-based black economic empowerment rule.like Starlink must be 30% owned by historically disadvantaged groups if they want to operate in South Africa .

“This is part of an initiative to significantly expand access to broadband connectivity to poor South Africans and people living in remote parts of the country,” he elaborated.Malatsi said that broadband access makes it easier for people to start businesses, grow businesses, seek employment, work remotely, and market goods and services.

The minister said that getting better broadband connectivity in South Africa, and specifically Starlink, is a two part initiative.
